A recent story in the Express highlighted the fact that millions of UK motorists will be driving abroad while on their holidays this summer.

Drivers should be aware that there is a list of kit they must carry with them while on the roads abroad to stay safe but also avoid problems.

Across Europe, there is a number of items that it is deemed are mandatory for drivers to keep in their vehicle.

One such item is the warning triangle, which is a legal requirement for drivers to keep in their car across 30 EU and EFTA counties.

For example, in France drivers that fail to carry a warning triangle can be penalised by a €135 (£120) fine.

Stephen Wornham founder and Managing Director of Road Safety Designs said: “This is the time of year when families are planning their summer holiday trips on the continent, and they will discover that it’s a legal requirement to carry a warning triangle across Europe.”

Motorists may not be aware that it is recommended that drivers carry one in the boot in Britain.

Warning triangles are not the only piece of equipment that motorists are advised, or even legally obligated, to carry in their car with them.

Brits driving to France MUST have emissions stickers

The following kit and equipment are recommended for motorists driving in European countries:
  • first-aid kit
  • toolkit
  • red warning triangle
  • reflective jacket
  • torch
  • fire extinguisher
  • Prepare your car before hitting the road:
  • service your car
  • check the water, oil and coolant level
  • check tyre pressures and thread
  • make sure your car displays a GB sticker or it’s visible on your number plate

It is not only a set of equipment that drivers must collect together before they travel abroad, but also a list of documents.
