Traffic lights could be removed from the roads in the UK over time thanks to new technology being developed by Ford.

The view of Ford is that when autonomous vehicles become commonplace, there will no longer be the necessity for traffic lights.

In fact, it has been working on technology which could make this less than an idea and more of a reality.

It is working on choreographing the technology to enable drivers and passengers to enjoy free-flowing traffic and avoid the stress of stop-start driving.

The inspiration behind it was how pedestrians interact with each other and move on the street, automatically adjusting their speed to avoid crossing paths.

Ford is currently testing the technology that would advise drivers to slow down or accelerate to avoid a collision with vehicles approaching from other directions.

The Intersection Priority Management (IPM) was demonstrated earlier this week in Milton Keynes, U.K as part of the government-funded UK Autodrive programme.

“We know that intersections and traffic lights can be a real bugbear for many drivers,” said Christian Ress, supervisor, Driver Assist Technologies, Ford Research, and Advanced Engineering.

“With the connected car technology we have been demonstrating this week, we envisage a world where vehicles are more aware of each other and their environment, enabling intelligent cooperation and collaboration on the roads – and around junctions.”
