Police officers are using the top deck of double-decker buses to catch motorists using mobile phones while behind the wheel of the car and issue £200 fines.

Motorists using their mobile phone while driving could be caught out by police officers using an unorthodox new technique.

Operation Top Deck has been rolled out which deploys police officers on the top deck of double-decker buses to snare motorists flouting road rules.

Plain-clothed officers are equipped with video cameras to record drivers using their mobile devices while driving.

The new initiative has been put in place to try and crack down on the number of motorists ignoring the road rule.

The West Midlands force’s Road Harm Reduction Team for in tandem with some officers on the buses while some are on bikes.

Officers on the top deck radio down to those on bikes to convey which motorists are breaking the law.

These offenders are then diverted to a designated location and then shown clips of them committing the offence and other harrowing clips of the dangers of using a phone while driving.

Within a few hours of the scheme launching, 45 drivers were caught.
