A common misconception held by some drivers in the UK could lead to some very serious consequences while on the roads. There is a myth that it is fine to exceed the speed limit while overtaking the vehicle in front of you, so long as you tuck back in and slow to the speed limit immediately after doing so. However, experts have now weighed in to prove that there is no weight to this argument and drivers should not exceed the speed limit at any time. Francis Noakes, of the new Get Licensed Driving School, says: “From own experience, I know many drivers incorrectly believe they are allowed to break the speed limit just to get past another motorist.
But let’s set the record straight – this is nonsense.
“The speed limit is the speed limit, full stop. It’s the maximum you’re legally allowed to travel on that road, no matter what you happen to be doing.
“Overtaking is no excuse for speeding. And if you have to break the speed limit to perform an overtaking move, then you should think twice about doing it.”
“Although you should complete an overtaking manoeuvre quickly, never exceed the speed limit for the road.”
Rule 125 of the Highway Code test that the speed limits is the absolute maximum, and should only be driven at if it is safe to do so, depending on conditions.
Rule 124 adds “You MUST NOT exceed the maximum speed limits for the road and for your vehicle.”
In addition to this, rule 163 states overtaking must only be done when it is legal to do so, with tips including not getting too close to the vehicle you intend to go past.
