UK motorists could soon be stung with an influx of speeding tickets after proposals to scrap the “buffer zone” is revealed.
The current “buffer zone” gives motorists a tolerance while driving before they are hit with a speeding fine.
Drivers are given a leeway of a few miles per hour to account for technology discrepancies, but it could all soon be scrapped.
An official review is underway to the 10 per cent tolerance rule as Chief Constable Anthony Bangham believes that it makes motorists think “it is OK to speed.”
Mr. Bangham added, “We need to change our messaging and ensure greater consistency of approach when dealing with those who exceed the speed limit.”
Earlier this year there was a proposal to ditch the tolerance one, but it was met with opposition due to issues with resourcing and also tolerances.
According to police experts, speedometers and see cameras can be inaccurate to around 3mph, which means that ditching the tolerance could see millions of innocent motorists punished.
Under current rules, the tolerance is 10 per cent plus 2mph meaning some if you’re travelling at 70mph you may not be penalised unless you’re travelling at 79mph.
