From 10 September 2008, if you’re sitting a driving test, you’ll also be assessed on your ability to drive or ride in a way that shows eco-safe driving techniques.
This assessment is not part of the existing assessment criteria for the practical test and you will not fail your test because you don’t demonstrate eco-safe driving techniques.
The driving examiner will assess control and planning, and at the end of the test will give you feedback, as guidance, on how efficiently you’re driving.
ECO Safe Driving Tips
Below are a list of handy tips taken from the Direct.gov website.
Always try to use the vehicle controls as smoothly as possible, with particular attention to:
- starting and moving away
- using gears
- driving at an appropriate speed
- This reduces wear and tear on your vehicle and will help in reducing CO2.
Reduce harmful emissions by anticipating road traffic conditions and acting in good time, rather than reacting to them at the last moment, especially:
- showing hazard awareness and planning
- making use of engine braking
- stopping the engine when appropriate
Tips for ‘eco-safe’ driving and riding
Follow these tips as a guide to safe driving or riding for economy:
- check your tyres regularly and keep at recommended pressure
- don’t carry unnecessary weight
- remove roof-rack or luggage boxes when not needed to reduce air resistance
- don’t exceed speed limits, accelerate gently
- consider using cruise control where it would be appropriate
- turn off your engine if you’re likely to have a prolonged wait
- use air conditioning only when you need to
- plan your route to avoid known congestion points
- try to travel during off-peak times
Further information on eco-safe driving and riding is available in the leaflet ‘Eco-Safe Driving – a guide to safe driving/riding for economy’. This is handed to candidates at the end of their driving test or can be downloaded.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAYING…
I was nervous to start with driving lessons however during the course of the lessons my instructor Rob Andrews helped build my confidence and road knowledge and he helped me pass my test first time with 2 minors. Highly recommend Rob
I passed my test second time in December of 2019 with no minors, and I thoroughly recommend learning to drive with David! I had lessons for around a year and he instilled in me a great level of confidence that I never thought I’d be able to reach. I can now drive very independently without any nerves! Thank you David
I had a brilliant experience.. I was a nervous driver who can make mistake any time and unexpectedly but I literally start loving driving because of Rob Schifani.. He made me comfortable and looking forward to the better by giving me simplest examples.. He made me not to give up.. Me passing test is due to my instructor… So congrats to you
Before I started learning I was so nervous, in my first lesson Rob Andrews talked it all through with me and calmed my nerves really well, learning to drive for me has been a wonderful experience as Rob is such a nice guy and is really easy to get along with. I would highly recommend Rob Andrews as I passed today with 1 minor.
What an emotional rollercoaster Steve and I have been through to get me through my test… but we finally did it!!!! It’s been tough learning to drive again at 35. Even though I’m pretty confident behind the wheel, anxiety and frustration has got the better of me on occasions. But Steve has been the most patient, kind and understanding instructor, who truly brings the best out of me and didn’t give up on me after many meltdowns. 5* isn’t enough on here. The BEST instructor I Could have asked for!
Highly recommend Rob Andrews from surrey driving force. He taught me everything I needed to know and helped me a lot whilst learning how to drive. I passed my test 1st time with 1 minor, so I’m really happy with how it went.
So today after a long difficult journey with self belief i passed My driving test first time with 2 minors. My instructor was Rob Andrews and i Can’t recommend him enough! He has helped me over come my negativity and has really gone the extra mile on each of my lessons to make me feel relaxed so for someone who is like me and struggles with positive mental attitude i really recommend rob. Thank you rob for everything you have done for me and im so glad i made you proud! Thank you once again!!!
got to say surrey driving force was an amazing experience as i pass first time today and instructor chris was brilliant at his job would highly recommend to anyone looking for a driving school and instructor
I would 100% recommend Surrey driving force and Steve as a instructor. Extremely helpful and got me through my test passing first time!
I would thoroughly recommend Surrey Driving Force as I passed my practical test today first time with only four minors. First of all I would like to thank Kish for teaching me the basic ground rules of operating a car and getting me started out on the roads when I had no clue what was going on. I would also like to thank Rob Schifano for continuing the process of broadening my experience whilst out and about. He is very patient and easily explains how to carry out manoeuvres by breaking it down into simple steps when I was struggling.
