Middlesex Eco-Safe Driving

What Is Eco-Safe Driving?
Eco-safe driving covers a number of different aspects of driving including road safety as well as reducing your fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. Making changes to your driving style will save you money on both fuel and avoiding costly car repairs caused by bad habits. Below we've highlighted several key-points that can greatly reduce fuel consumption and promote eco-safe driving.
Below are 5 Eco Safe Driving Tips
1) Drive At The Optimum Speed Limit Where Possible
Each model of car is different but normally the optimum speed for fuel consumption is around 55 - 60 mph. If you consult you cars manual you should be able to find this information. Obviously it's not possible to drive at this speed everywhere you go, but if you are driving on a dual carriageway or motorway, driving steadily at the optimum speed will greatly improve your fuel consumption.
2) Only Use Air Conditioning When Needed
Most cars nowadays are equipped with air-conditioning which in the summer months can be a godsend. However you may or may not know, that your air-conditioning is also powered by your cars fuel. Unnecessary use of the air-conditioning will waste your cars fuel. If it is hot and you need to cool your car down, air-conditioning is however a better option than opening your windows. Due to aero-dynamics, open windows cause a greater fuel consumption than air conditioning. Only use air conditioning when needed, once your car is cool, switch it off.
3) Check Your Tyre Pressure
Regularly check your tyre pressure is correct, particularly if you are going on a long journey. Consult your car's manual in order to establish the correct tyre pressure for your car. Under inflated tyres also wear out much quicker, again contributing to unnecessary waste. Under-inflated tyres mean that the engine has to work harder, and in turn needs more fuel to do so. Consider how difficult it is to ride a bike with flat tyres - it is exactly the same principal with your car. This simple and quick check can save you hundreds of pounds over a year.
4) Avoid Sharp Braking and Quick Acceleration
The key to Eco-Safe Driving is steady, controlled driving and the awareness of your surroundings. If you are driving towards traffic lights or a junction you can slow down with minimal use of the brakes if you allow yourself plenty time. The same goes with sharp acceleration - flying off at traffic lights for instance, usually achieves nothing other than creating danger for other road users and wasting costly fuel. By continually looking at the road ahead, you can anticipate situations well in advance and drive steadily and safely.
5) Keep Weight To a Minimum
The more weight in your car, the harder the engine needs to work to move the car. This means the engine needs more fuel. If you have heavy objects in your boot that are not needed all of the time, consider removing then. Also consider not filling your fuel tank to the top every time you fill up. In normal driving conditions you are never far from a petrol station, and unless you are going on a really long journey, normally 10 litres of fuel at a time is adequate. Carrying a full tank of petrol is like carrying an extra person on board!
