According to a recent report, a shocking number of drivers in the UK could fail to meet the minimum legal requirements for driving on the road by not having regular eyesight checkups.

New research revealed that almost half (44 per cent) optometrists in the UK have seen a patient who drives despite being told their vision is below the legal standard.

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) has called for tougher laws to be introduced on vision testing for motorists.

This is because there are an estimated 2,900 injuries occurring on the roads annually due to poor vision.

Under current laws, drivers are only required to have a vision test when taking the practical driving test. To pass this test, drivers are required to read a number plate from 20 metres away.

Once a motorist has obtained their licence, it is up to them to tell the DVLA if they have a problem with their eyesight.

What this means is a UK driver could take their eye test aged 17 and legally not need to take another one until they stop driving.

However, motorists that require glasses or contact lenses while on the roads can face a hefty fine for dangerous driving and three penalty points.
